Lake Jozini

The Jozini dam, previously referred to as the Pongolapoort dam, is built along the Pongola River. This dam was completed in 1074 and spans an area of around 17 000 hectares (when full). The dam wall measures 70 m in height. The original purpose of this dam was to supply water for local farming of produce such as sugar cane, cotton and maize.

The dam is situated in a rather attractive area of KZN, in the western side of the Lebombo mountain range. This particular area is made up if bushveld, wildlife and subtropical weather. The dam is in the midst of game reserves, both private and provincial. This area has now become a protected area for breeding birds, mammals and fish.

There are around 27 species of fish in the dam, the most significant being the tigerfish, tilapia, barbel, Yellowfish and carp. This dam is the southernmost habitat of the tigerfish. The tigerfish have been thriving in this habitat and the population has grown to the point of making this dam one the most popular fishing spots in South Africa. The fishing is compared to other popular areas such as the Okavango Delta and the Zambezi River, but is luckily much closer. The dam offers a variety of activities such as water safaris, tiger fishing, walking trails, and bird watching. There is also the option to live aboard a house boat such as the Shayamanzi on Lake Jozini.

4* Jozini Tiger Lodge and spa (Jozini )
The location of the lodge is a prime location as it is surrounded by world heritage sites and internationally recognised nature reserves. A main attraction at this lodge is the amazing Tiger fishing. The Tiger fish is said to be one of the most exciting fresh water game fish there is to catch.

Shayamanzi Houseboat (Jozini Dam)
Both of the house boats have tender boats which are managed by the staff and can be used by the guests to explore the surroundings and to take part in activities. The boats can also take you back to land for activities like game drives, elephant monitoring, rhino walks and half day cultural outings into rural Zululand.
